Description
This is Tuscany as it’s meant to be enjoyed. Part of the Podere le Volpaie, a quiet condominium completed as recently as the summer of 2008, ‘Il Cortile’ (the Courtyard) is so called because of the fabulous view across the quiet old rectangle, past the ancient (but still working) well to the Etruscan capital Volterra.
“This is another Tuscany, and one that few people take the trouble to get to know, but which is richly rewarding” (Italia Magazine, December 2009)
Volterra has recently become much better known as a setting for the ‘New Moon’ film from Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga.
Bedrooms
The master bedroom has wonderful character. Through its double French doors you have a magical view of ancient Volterra – at night, its lights have a truly romantic sparkle. There is a very comfortable kingsized traditional bed. Other bedroom furniture (double wardrobe and bedside tables) is also traditional in style, decorated with floral patterns. Wall lights – as in every room – are all alabaster, reflecting Volterra’s name as the alabaster capital of the world. The second bedroom has a luxury quality double sofabed. It is simply furnished. Its French doors open onto a cosy terrace with open views across the fields to medieval Montecatini.
Bathrooms
Furnished to a very high quality, the bathroom has a shower, sink with large mirror and shaver socket, toilet and bidet.
Living room
Like the other main rooms, the kitchen/diner has French doors opening to wonderful vistas. In this case, it looks out onto the courtyard and old well, like the main bedroom.
There is a dining table to seat four.
Kitchen
There is a fully-fitted kitchen with gas hob and electric oven. A large fridge/freezer will hold all the food and drink you could possibly need. Added amenities include a microwave and – unusual in Italy – a kettle and toaster.
Other rooms
The second bedroom doubles up as a lounge area. It is an ideal place to sit when you need a break from the heat outside. Its adjoining terrace is perfect for evening socialising with a bottle of local wine and memories of the day.
Description of amenities
‘Il Cortile’ is cleaned weekly. Bed linen and towles are also changed weekly. Arrangements can be made for more frequent changing of linen on request at an additional cost.
The village of Saline di Volterra is 3 minutes’ drive away. It has a good range of food shops, a couple of trully Italian restaurants where you will get a really friendly reception and a cantina to buy boxes of delicious local wine for one euro per litre!
Suitability
Disabled friendly. Everything is on one floor, with immediate access to external areas, though there is a slope down to the communal pool.
The property is ideally suited to couples, families with teenage children or a small group of friends.
Local activities
A good-sized communal pool shares in the delightful views of the surrounding countryside. It’s a good place to come and relax after a trip out to Pisa (50 minutes’ drive), Florence (1 1/4 hours) Siena (an hour) or San Gimignano (40 minutes). If you need salt water to swim in, the coast is 40 minutes’ drive.
For a completely different experience, visit Lajatico, the home town of Andrea Bocelli. His Teatro del Silenzio (the “theatre of silence”, so called because its serene silence is broken for only one night a year by his annual open air concert) will live with you forever.
